Crocker Park 5K review
June 28, 2008 By Ron Dorfeld:
This was one of those weird times where a local race was offering cash prizes, but not many people even knew about it. Even though it was listed on the Hermes website, most people must have missed it. That coupled with the fact that this weekend was also one of Ohio's Premier events, the Hyde Park Blast in Cincinnati, OH left the door wide open for the fast, local runners.
Air soaked with moisture and temperatures in the mid 70's made it difficult to think about running fast times. A good size crowd showed up for an inaugural race, but none of the usual money hounds were there. Rick Bement, Dave Leonard and Steve Benesh were all there looking for a piece of the pie and all capable of low to mid 15 minute 5k's.
As the gun sounded the crowd funneled through the narrow streets of Crocker Park in Westlake Ohio and out onto a main road. I settled into a comfortable pace in the second pack keeping a close eye on my pace. Slowly, I was gaining on the lead pack and was a bit worried that I was picking things up a bit, but a quick glance down at my Garmin said no. It seemed the leaders were running a tactful race, rather then a fast one.
By the time I hit the first mile mark (5:24), I was completely soaked. It had been a very slight uphill to this point until we made a turn to the right and things leveled out a bit. About midway through the second mile, I passed the first place female Jessica Kuhr. We made another turn to the right and a quick turn around and headed back the way we had come out. As we passed the second mile mark (5:26), Jessica pulled next to me and began to press the pace. Along with her was a older man who I was not familiar with, but later recognized his name, Dave Goots. I didn't know how old he was but was fairly sure he was a master. I also picked things up and stayed in touch with Dave. Jessica was really starting to roll and pulled away from both of us.
As we neared Crocker Park, I could see Dave was starting to falter so I made a move on him. He did not respond to my surge as I turned back into the complex and passed mile 3 (5:19). One final turn to the left and the finish was in sight. I pressed hard making sure not to get passed and was happy to look down and see my watch stopped at 16:39. Afterwards, I was even more pleased to see my chip time was a full 2 seconds faster giving me my fastest 5K time in the last 2 seasons, 16:37.1.
Up in front, it seems that both Rick and Dave waited until the 3 mile mark to make a move. Rick ending up out sprinting Dave to win the race (and $500) in 15:25.3 to Dave's 15:25.7 (still $300 smackers). Steve "Thor" Benesh rounded out the the top 3 with a PR 15:43.2 and the final cash prize ($100).
